F-Droid release and paid version
Mitch is finally available on F-Droid!
I’ve been waiting for this moment ever since Mitch was released 4 months ago.
For those of you who don’t know, F-Droid is a catalogue of free and open-source applications for Android. It is known for having high standards for security and user privacy, and it’s another alternative to Google Play.
In fact, the entire Mitch project was inspired by F-Droid.
Paid version
As a result of this, I’m planning to make some changes.
- Starting with next Saturday (Februrary 6th), the itch.io version of Mitch will cost $2.
- Starting next month (March 1st), the GitLab version will be deprecated.
- F-Droid version will always be free to use.
- The free version will always have all the same features as the paid itch.io version.
The reason why I’m doing this is because I want to encourage people to try F-Droid. Like I said, I don’t want to introduce any “Pro” and “Free” versions of Mitch - the paid version and the free version will be exactly the same.
I’ve wanted to do this from the very beginning. Some of you may remember that when I first released Mitch, it also cost 2$. I’ve always wanted more people to try F-Droid, while the paid itch.io version would be kind of a donation, or an extra convenience for those who don’t want to install yet another app store.
That plan failed, because the F-Droid release was delayed by 4 months. But now I’m coming back to it.
“Is it easy to migrate?”
Unfortunately, the F-Droid version is not compatible with the itch.io and GitLab versions, because it uses a different signing key. The only way to migrate is to uninstall Mitch, and then install it again through F-Droid, but you will lose your data (your list of installed games).
I apologize for the inconvenience.
“What happens if I don’t migrate?”
Mitch will fail to update, and you will get error messages.
If you’ve already paid for Mitch then you won’t have to buy it again.
The future of Mitch
In the future, Mitch will only have two versions.
- The free F-Droid version, which allows for secure and robust updates.
- The paid itch.io version, which is a convenience for those who don’t want to install F-Droid, and also a way to support the app developer.
I will keep adding new features to both of these versions. I’ve already figured out a way to show your library of owned games, and filter out Android versions. But this will take some time to implement.
